10. Kapitel

• Ram und Salim befreien sich aus den Händen Mamans und seiner Bande indem sie auf einen Zug Richtung Juhu aufspringen.
• Angekommen in Juhu gehen sie zu Neelima Kumai (Bollywood-Star) um eine Einstellung als Hausdiener zu bitten. Neelima benötigt nur einen von ihnen. Ihre Mutter Maaji will keine Muslime im Haus, also wählt Neelima Ram (Salim ist ein Muslime). Außerdem ist Maaji gegen im Haus lebende Männer. Aus diesem Grund lebt Ram mit Salim in einer kleinen Hütte in Ghatkopar, die von Neelima bezahlt wird.
• Neelima lehrt Ram über Filmgenres und erzählt ihm, dass sie als „Tragedy Queen of India“ beziechnet wird.
• Maaji erkrankt. Ram bekommt den Auftrag, Medikamente für sie zu kaufen.
• Eines Abends möchte Neelima ihren Film in Anwesenheit aller im Haus arbeitenden Personen sehen. Ram meint, dass der Film das zu realtistisch darstellt.
• Ram beobachtet, wie Neelima das Haus verlässt und erst am späten Abend zurückkommt. Er folgert daraus, dass Neelima einen Freund hat.
• Neelima benutzt viele Kosmetika, um schön zu sein und jung auszusehen.
• Maaji, die Mutter, stirbt.
• Ram zieht in Neelimas Haus und schläft in einem kleinen Bügelzimmer.
• Es kommt ein Einbrecher in Neelimas Haus und Ram will, dass Neelima die Polizei ruft. Der Einbrecher sagt, dass er der größte Fan von ihr sei, und dass er nur gekommen ist, um ihre Filme mit ihr gemeinsam anzusehen.
• Ram ist misstrauisch. Neelima stellt dem Einbrecher mehrere Aufgaben, die er erfolgreich löst. Sie setzt sich mit dem Fan auf die Couch und sieht sich die Filme an. Ram muss die beiden mit Tee und Keksen bewirten.
• Neelima braucht Privatsphäre, aber Ram stalkt sie und sieht ihren Geliebten
• Sie hat Prellungen im ganzen Gesicht und ein blaues Auge. Außerdem gibt sie ihrem „Freund“ Zigaretten, Whiskey und Geld.
• Neelima sagt, sie liebe ihn, und dass eine wirkliche „Tragedy Queen of India“ Schmerz aushalten können muss. Ram scherzt, dann wäre er auch ein „Tragedy King“.
• Neelima wird interviewt: Journalisten meinen, man sieht, dass sie älter wird
• Neelima hat den Wunsch, jung zu sterben und bekommt keine Jobs mehr aufgrund ihres Alters.
• Neelima zeigt Ram ihren nackten Körper, der durch Zigaretten verbrannt ist und zieht Rams Gesicht an ihre Brust. Ram fühlt sich, als wäre er kein Waise mehr. (zu diesem Zeitpunkt ist er 13 Jahre alt)
• Neelima Depressivität steigert sich.
• Sie trägt ihren teuersten Sari, ihren feinsten Schmuck und verbringt Stunden vor dem Spiegel
• Als sie damit fertig ist, spült sie ihre Kosmetika die Toilette hinunter und schluckt Schlaftabletten, die ihr ihre Mutter hinterließ. Sie schickt Ram zum einkaufen.
• Als Ram zurückkehrt liegt Neelima mit ihrer Trophäe „National Award for the best Actress“ für ihre Rolle in „Mumtaz Mahal“ tot im Bett.
• Ram hat Angst, die Polizei würde ihn als Mörder verhaften und verlässt das Haus, ohne diese zu rufen.

4. Kapitel

• Thomas lebt in dem „Dheli Juvenile Home“-Waisenhaus für Jungen.
• Es sind zu viele Kinder auf zu kleinem Raum untergebracht (laute und schmutzige Umgebung).
• Die Jungs leben unter schlechten Bedingungen und werden von Herrn Gupta (Leiter des Hauses) geschlagen, teilweise sogar missbraucht.
• Weil Thomas Englisch spricht wird er zum Oberhaupt einer Gruppe innerhalb des Waisenhauses und hat hierdurch viele Vorteile. Salim kommt in das Heim, da seine Familie durch Hindus getötet wurde.
• Herr Gupta versucht Salim zu missbrauchen, aber er wird von anderen Wärtern abgehalten. Alle Jungs aus dem Waisenhaus machen einen Ausflug.
• Salim und Thomas gehen zu einem Wahrsager.
• Der Wahrsager sagt, Salim wird ein berühmter Schauspieler werden. Thomas‘ Sterne scheinen nicht gut zu stehen. Der Wahrsager gibt ihm eine „Lucky Coin“ (Glücksmünze).
• Salim und Thomas werden von Sethji ausgewählt, mit ihm nach Mumbai zu gehen. Sie wissen nicht, was die Pläne Sethjis sind. Ihnen wurde gesagt, dass er ein Mann ist, der behinderten Kindern hilft.
• Ram und Salim werden in Mamans „Schule“ in Mumbai gebracht.
• Als die beiden die anderen Kinder sehen, sind sie aufgrund ihres Äußeren schockiert. Sie werden von Masterji in Musik und Gesang gelehrt.
• Ram und Salim erfahren von den anderen Kindern traurige Geschichten, und dass Mamans Schule keine normale Schule sei, sondern eine zur Ausbildung von Bettel-Kindern.
• Ram macht seine erste Erfahrung mit Drogen oder eher Kleber. Er sieht keine wunderbare Vision seiner Mutter wie Jitu, sondern durchlebt einen Horrortraum. Nach diesem beschließt er, nie wieder Drogen zu nehmen.
• Nachdem Ram ein Gespräch zwischen Maman und Punnoose belauscht, dass diese Salim und ihn lähmen wollen um mehr Geld zu verdienen, entschließt er sich mit Salim aus der Schule zu flüchten. Er erkennt, dass die anderen Kinder nicht durch die Polizei, sondern durch Maman verstümmelt wurden.

Chapter No. 4

• Thomas lives in the Dheli Juvenile Home for boys.
• There are too many children on too less space (noisy and dirty atmosphere).
• The boys have to live under bad conditions and are beaten by Mr. Gupta, some boys are even abused by him.
• The dormitory is like hell.
• Because of speaking English Thomas becomes the leader of the boys and has advantages. Salim comes to the dormitory due to his family being killed by Hindus.
• Mr. Gupta wants to abuse Salim too, but he was caught by the other wardens. All boys from the dormitory make a trip by international NGO.
• Salim and Thomas go to a palmist.
• The palmist says Salim will become a famous actor but for Thomas the stars do not seem to be right. The palmist gives him a lucky coin.
• Salim and Thomas are chosen by Sethji to go with him to Mumbai. They do not know what Sethji plans but they were told that he is a kind man who helps disabled children.
• Ram and Salim are brought to Maman’s „school“ in Mumbai.
• When the two boys see the other children, they are shocked by their outward appearance – They are teached in music by Masterji.
• Ram and Salim get to know the other children’s sad stories and that Maman’s school is not a normal school, but a beggar school. They should be happy to be able to stay in there even if Maman is not that nice because they can not go anywhere else and are dependent on Maman’s protection from other gangs. Moreover Raju tells Rani his secret about Neelima Kumaii and her search for servants.
• Ram makes his first experience with drugs or rather glue. Instead of seeing a wonderful vision of his mother (like Jitu) he suffers a horrortrip of his mother, after this he decides to try glue never again.
• After Ram hearing a conversation between Maman and Punnoose that they want to cripple Salim and him for earning more money, he decides to run away with Salim. Doing this, he realizes the children are crippled by Maman and his gang and not by the police („Whatever you do, wherever you go, never go to the police. Ever.“, p. 108 ll. 23-24).

Chapter No. 10

• Ram and Salim escape from the clutches of Maman and his gang by taking a train.
• Arrived in Juhu they go to Neelima Kumai (a film star) to ask for a job as a servant. Neelima needs only one of them and her mother Maaji doesn’t like Muslims, so she chooses Ram (because of Salim being a Muslim). Neelima wants Ram to be a live-in servant, but her mother doesn’t want to have a male in the house. Because of that Ram lives in a chawl in Ghatkopar, in which Salim also can live and which is paid by Neelima
• Neelima teaches Ram about film genres and tells him that she is called the „Tragedy Queen of India“
• Maaji becomes ill, so Ram has the job to buy medicines for her
• One evening Neelima wants to watch her movie together with all workers of the house. Ram thinks that the film shows the life too realistically. Due to seeing Neelima leaving the house and returning late in the evening, he thinks she could have a boyfriend
• Neelima uses a lot of creams (etc.) to be beautiful and look young
• Maaji dies
• Ram moves to Neelima’s flat and lives in a tiny ironing-room. One evening there is a burglar in Neelima’s house and Ram wants Neelima to call the police but the burglar says that he is the biggest fan of her and that he only wants her TV to watch NeeIima’s movies.
• Ram does not believe him but Neelima tests the burglar with questions about her. The burglar can answer all questions, so Neelima lets him sitting on her couch and Ram has to serve them tea and biscuits.
• Neelima needs privacy, but Ram observes her and sees her lover
• Neelima has bruises all over her face and a black eye. She gives cigarettes, whiskey and money to her boyfriend.
• Neelima says she loves him and that a real tragedy queen has to feel pain, Ram says that due this facts he can become a tragedy king
• Neelima has an interview, the journalist tests her that she is old
• Neelima has the wish to die young
• She gets no hero jobs because of being too old
• Neelima shows Ram her naked body, which is burned by cigarettes and draws Ram’s face into her chest. Ram feels as though he is no orphan anymore (he is 13 years old)
• Neelima becomes more depressed, wears her most expensive sari, puts on her finest jewellery and spends hours in front of the mirror
• She flushes all her cosmetic creams down the toilet, gulps down the tablets of her mother, go to bed and wants Ram to go to the market
• When Ram returns Neelima lies death in her bed, with her trophy „National Award for the best Actress“ for her role in “Mumtaz Mahal“.
• Because of being afraid that the police will arrest Ram as a murderer he doesn’t call the police and quits the scene

Chapter No. 2

• Ram was born – eighteen years ago – on Christmas Day in the Church of St. Mary
• He was an orphan child, which was left behind by his mother in the clothes bin of St. Mary’s orphanage, but he didn’t know the reason
• He was put up for adoption, but no one came for him. Ram had no name („I was just called Baby – the baby that no one wanted“, p. 46 ll. 20-21)
• Finally, he was adopted by Mrs. Philomena Thomas (who has worked as a cleaner) and her husband Dominic Thomas (who has worked as a gardener). Mrs. Thomas ditched her old husband and the newly adopted baby and ran with the tailor Mastan Sheik to Bhopal. Mr. Thomas was very angry and brought the baby in his cradle to Father Timothy and left it there („Father, this baby is the root cause of all the trouble in my life. You forced me to adopt him, so now you decide what to do with him.“, p. 47 ll. 14-15). Father Timothy took care of the baby for six years and gave Ram the name Joseph Michael Thomas. Two men from the All Faith Committee came to look for the orphan child: They discussed about the baby’s name, because of nobody having known to what religion the parents belonged. The two men and Father Timothy agreed on the new name: Ram Mohammed Thomas.
• Ram was raised by Father Timothy, which taught him about the life of Jesus, Adam and Eve and about other religions, that is the reason for him being a particularly religious boy
• Due to the fact, that the relationship between Ram and Father Timothy was never precisely defined, Ram wasn’t sure how important it was for Father Timothy („It was never made clear to me whether I was servant or son, parasite or pet.“, p. 52 l. 23).
• One Sunday Father Timothy wasn’t alone at the altar, there was another younger priest, called Father John Little.
• Father Timothy has invited Father John Little for dinner: Ram spilled the soup on Father John Little. The reaction of the priest was very furious („Bloody Hell!“, p. 54 l. 10; „You’re that idiot orphan boy who spilled soup on me the other day! You’d better behave yourself in Father Timothy’s absence. I’ll be watching you very carefully.“, p. 54 ll. 17-20). [Ram is traumatized from now on.]
• Three days later he went shopping with Joseph: A motorcycle rider came, slaps Ram on the head
• Father John had strange designs on his body, kept strange magazines under his bed and often had visitors he did not know
• Ram saw that father John giving drugs to the strangers.
• Ram was very glad that Father Tymothy returned from a journey.
• Ian, an English backpacker passing through Delhi arrives
• Ram saw  trough a keyhole how father John did something bad to Ian. He informed Father Tymothy who said that Ram had to go to bed. The next day Ram found father Tymothy and father John dead
• He cried together with Ian for three hours because of Father Tymothy’s death. He told Ian that he had lost his father and that he is now a real orphan
• Ian told Ram that father Tymothy was his father too and that he is now also a real orphan.

Chapter No. 12

• Prem Kumar asks the question: „What is the name of Mumtaz Mahal’s father?“
• The show takes a commercial break: Because of knowing the first question of one billion Rupees by Ram (works as a guide for two years at the Taj Mahal), Prem Kumar changes the question: He does not want Ram to win (p. 304)
• The show continues and Kumar changes the final question to: „Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29, Ops. 106: ‚Hammerton Sonata‘ is in which key?“
• Taking another commercial break Kumar and Ram go to the toilet, where Kumar asks Ram whether he knows the answer.
• Kumar thinks that Ram does not know the answer and tries to corrupt him with 1000 Rupees.
• Ram does not come to the show to win money, he comes to the show to get revenge on Prem, because Prem Kumar ruins Neelima and hurts Nita by beating her. (p. 307)
• Ram takes out a gun and points on Prem, but he „can’t kill a man with a cold heart“, (p. 309, l. 25). He remembers Maman and the experiences in his childhood and lowers the gun (p. 309, l. 22). Ram thinks about the money and his following possibilities.
• The quizshow continues: Ram takes the Half and Half lifeboat, there are the answers A and C. Ram decides to drop a coin, Heads A, Tails C
• The coin shows Head, so Ram took answer A, which was correct.
