Slumdog Millionaire: The Thirteenth Question – Content

Chapter No. 12

  • Prem Kumar asks the question: „What is the name of Mumtaz Mahal’s father?“
  • The show takes a commercial break: Because of knowing the first question of one billion Rupees by Ram (works as a guide for two years at the Taj Mahal), Prem Kumar changes the question: He does not want Ram to win (p. 304)
  • The show continues and Kumar changes the final question to: „Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29, Ops. 106: ‚Hammerton Sonata‘ is in which key?“
  • Taking another commercial break Kumar and Ram go to the toilet, where Kumar asks Ram whether he knows the answer.
  • Kumar thinks that Ram does not know the answer and tries to corrupt him with 1000 Rupees.
  • Ram does not come to the show to win money, he comes to the show to get revenge on Prem, because Prem Kumar ruins Neelima and hurts Nita by beating her. (p. 307)
  • Ram takes out a gun and points on Prem, but he „can’t kill a man with a cold heart“, (p. 309, l. 25). He remembers Maman and the experiences in his childhood and lowers the gun (p. 309, l. 22). Ram thinks about the money and his following possibilities.
  • The quizshow continues: Ram takes the Half and Half lifeboat, there are the answers A and C. Ram decides to drop a coin, Heads A, Tails C
  • The coin shows Head, so Ram took answer A, which was correct.

Slumdog Millionaire: A Brother’s Promise – Content

Chapter No. 3

  • New neighbours move into room next to Ram’s (R.) and Salim‘s (S.).
  • The chawl’s administrator (Mr. Ramakrishna) tells R., being an responsible boy, to help the new neighbours (Mr. Shantaram, his wife and daughter) to settle down.
  • Mr Shantaram (Mr. S.) tells R. that there is no need to help because he is a scientist and the family won’t stay in the chawl for a long time.
  • R. knows that he lies: Those who can afford living elsewhere, stay in chawls. The same evening R. overhears a conversation of the family in which Mr. S. tells his daughter he doesn’t want any „street boys” to enter the house. R. & S. hardly see Mr. S. in the next weeks and never see the wife and daughter.
  • One evening: R. & S. overhear commentary of Mr. S. on state of sky that he explains  to his daughter Gudiya.
  • Ram wishes that he also had a father teaching him.
  • A week later Gudiya is allowed to keep a cat she found and calls it Pluto.
  • As time goes by, R. notices that Mr. S. is a drunkard.
  • Mr. S. swears and yells at his family when he comes home. The situation worsens until he starts throwing things at his wife and daughter. One evening he throws a hot cup of tea at his daughter who then has to be hospitalized.
  • Ram often visits Gudiya who sees him as her brother. It is a new relationship for him.
  • The evening Gudiya leaves the hospital, the drunken Mr. S. tries to touch his daughter but falls asleep. The same happens next evening.
  • Ram promises Gudiya that her father won’t try this again.
  • The next day, Ram charges Mr. S. from behind so he falls down to the ground and dies.
  • Ram leaves Mumbai and moves to Delhi.

Chapter No. 6

  • Ram is working in a bar and he knows how much a customer can drink.
  • He works until morning and lives in a chubby hole without running water in Dharavi. The bar is located in Colaba.
  • The houses in Dharavi are illegal constructions.
  • Ram is talking with a customer in the bar.
  • The customer, called Rao, is a manager of the company Industry Buttons.
  • Rao is drunk and tells a story about his brother.
  • Rao’s brother was the Chief Executive Officer of lndustry Buttons and helped Rao to get a job there.
  • Rao’s wife is a Voodoo Priestess. She wants money all the time and forces Rao into steeling.
  • She makes a Voodoo doll of Rao’s brother to hurt him for getting the firm and Rao gives her all she wants. She takes her family to Mumbai.
  • The brother is in a mental asylum after the Voodoomagic and Rao becomes the new CEO.
  • The secretary of Rao makes him realizing what he has done to his brother and he wants to get him out of the mental asylum.
  • Rao’s brother dies.
  • Finally, Rao dies in a bar, because someone played a Voodoo on him too.

James Moloney: Angela – Personen

Viele, die auf diese Seite stoßen, suchen nach Charakterisierungen der Personen, Personenkonstellationen oder Inhaltsangaben des o.g. Buches. Die wichtigsten Personen findet ihr unterhalb.

Angela Riley: Hauptperson, Namensgeberin des Buches und die beste Freundin Graceys. Sie studiert Personalwesen.

Gracey: Zweite Protagonistin mit Aborigine-Vorfahren. Stammt aus einer sehr armen Familie. Ihre Mutter starb, sie hat 2 Brüder (Dougy, Raymond). Raymond beging im Gefängnis Suizid. Dougy, der jüngere der Brüder, lebt bei einer Ihrer Tanten, Flo. Gracey denkt, ihrer Familie fremd geworden zu sein. Sie ist sehr sportlich und talentiert. Sie mag Angela und vertraut ihr, auch, weil sie sich in Angelas Familie willkommen fühlt. An der Universität tritt sie in Kontakt mit anderen Aborigines, welche ein Identitätsproblem (identity problem) in ihr hervorrufen.
Im weiteren Verlauf der Geschichte entfernt sie sich von Angela, da sie an der Freundschaft zweifelt. Auch der Einfluss ihrer neuen Freunde, wie z.B. Rhonda Haines fördert diese Zweifel. Später entscheidet sie sich für ein Leben bei den Aborigines.

Rhonda Haines: Ca. 45 Jahre alte Aborigine-Aktivistin. Promoviert in Philosophie, kümmert sich besonders um Gracey. Als Kind wurde sie von ihrer Mutter getrennt und kam in ein Waisenhaus. Setzt sich für die Rechte der Aborigines ein, mag keine Weißen. Kein Interesse an Gesprächen mit Angela.

Jarred: Ist Angelas Freund. Er hört ihr gern zu, wenn sie mit ihm über den Konflikt mit Gracey spricht. Durch die Eifersucht auf Gracey, die auf der Fahrt nach Sydney und später durch das Training für das Rennen entsteht, bröckelt die Beziehung
Ein weiterer Grund hierfür ist, dass Gracey sich auch nach dem Rennen offensichtlich gut mit Jarred versteht. Er möchte Gracey jedoch nicht als Grund für ein Ende der Beziehung mit Angela sehen und bricht den Kontakt zu ihr ab. Im Krankenhaus regeln sich die Probleme mit Angela. Fortan sind die beiden wieder ein Paar.

Cheryl Riley: Angelas Mutter. Hat sehr viel Lebenserfahrung, ist sehr wortgewandt. Sie wird von Angela oft um Rat gebeten, den sie überzeugend gibt.

Derek Campbell: Ebenfalls Aborigine. Als Kind wurde er von einer weißen Familie adoptiert. Er ist sehr bekannt und hält oft Reden.

Tom Riley: Angelas Vater, verheiratet mit Cheryl.

Vikas Swarup: Slumdog Millionaire (Q&A)

Wieder einmal etwas aus dem Englischunterricht. Unterhalb eine Zusammenfassung Vikas Swarups Bestsellers Q&A, der 2009 als Slumdog Millionaire in die Kinos kam. Weiterführende Links zu den Zusammenfassungen einzelner Kapitel befinden sich unter dieser Inhaltsangabe.

Ram Mohammed Thomas ist 18 Jahre alt und repräsentiert den typischen Jungen indischer Herkunft – arm, heimatlos und als Kind ausgesetzt. Das Glück des Lebens macht meist einen großen Bogen um ihn. Dieser Junge hat sich bei der Quizshow „Wer wird Milliardär“ beworben. Das allein ist schon verwunderlich. Noch wundersamer wird es durch die Tatsache, dass seine Bewerbung als Kandidat angenommen wird. Schließlich kann er alle Fragen richtig beantworten und gewinnt somit eine Milliarde Rupien.

Da es sich um die erste Sendung handelt, hat die Filmgesellschaft nicht vor das Geld auszuzahlen, da dies erst geschehen soll, wenn die Sendung ein Erfolg wird und entsprechend viel Geld eingespielt hat. Kurz: Die Filmgesellschaft hat das Geld noch nicht. Aus diesem Grund wird Ram verhaftet und es soll ihm nachgewiesen werden, dass er, ein ungebildeter Waisenjunge, betrogen hat und gar nicht in der Lage sein kann, alle Fragen der Sendung richtig zu beantworten.

Während seiner Untersuchungshaft erscheint eine Anwältin. Aus Interesse möchte sie Rams Verteidigung übernehmen. Ihr erzählt Ram alle Stationen seines Lebens, die dazu geführt haben, dass er die Fragen beantworten konnte.

James Moloney: Angela – ChapterLog Englisch

Die kapitelweise Inhaltsangabe (Chapter-Log) auf Deutsch veröffentlichte ich vor einigen Tagen. Da das Buch Angela von James Moloney jedoch meistens im Fach Englisch unterrichtet wird, hier noch einmal die englische Version der Zusammenfassung unterhalb.

Part 1: Brisbane
Schoolies – Chapter 1: Introduction of the book; introduction of the main-characters, Angela and Gracey have finished college and attend university; Gracey lives at Angela’s family. – The first weeks at university: Gracey joins the Indigenous Student Support Unit (short: „The Unit“), in which she meets the political activist Rhonda Haines for the first time; Angela meets Jarred (Clare’s brother) for the first time; Gracey spends a lot of time with other Aborigines.

UQ – Chapter 2: Angela makes a joke about Gracey, who is not amused about it. Angela goes with Jarred to the film festival, Gracey is at a party for Aborigines at the same time. Gracey would like to have her own room to do more with the Unit’s Aborigines; Angela is lonely as a result of the behavior of Gracey and tries to solve the problems in the friendship by trying to make friends with Rhonda, who ignores her. Angela feels uncomfortable in presence of other Aboriginal people.

Sorry Day – Chapter 3: Gracey gets a money problem and needs help from Angela in her job-search to look better in accompaniment of a white girl; Jarred and Angela spend much time together. Angela is angry with Gracey, because of not appearing at the „corner“. Angela’s mother tells Angela that she tried to talk with Gracey about Derek Campbell’s past, but Gracey rejected. Angela gets curious and wants to know what her mother intended to tell Gracey. She is told that her grandfather knows Derek Campbell since his early childhood.

Part 2: Sydney
Bankstown – Chapter 4: Angela and Gracey go to an event. They meet Rhonda with her mother, who tries to talk with Angela about the Stolen Generation. Gracey is not happy about the talked and so presents her own opinion, the view of Derek; Angela uses her mother’s arguments to discuss. Gracey and Angela do not talk to each other for a long time. – Vacation: Angela, Gracey and Jarred go to Sydney, taking part in the University Games. The dispute between the young women does not come to an end, however Angela decides to stay at her grandfather. Angela stays in touch with her great love Jarred, and the friendship with Gracey ends.

The Race – Chapter 5: Jarred tries to motivate Gracey to take part in the University Games for attending a university of sports. Later, he has a discussion with Angela on the various sides of Gracey. Angela decides to talk to her grandfather about the Stolen Generation. A few days after, Angela clears the air with Gracey; Clarifying by both reiterating their points of view. The result of the conversation is Gracey’s decision to stay with her relatives, the Aborigines.

The Gubba Man – Chapter 6: Angela talks with her grandmother about Gracey. Angela gets to know that her grandfather was one of the „kidnappers“ of children, the „Gubba men“. She is shocked when she realizes that she is not better than all the other whites. She notes that Gracey was right all the time. Angela can understand that Gracey, as a „Murri“, went to live with her relatives, but she is ashamed of the friendship having broken due to such disagreements.
